Small Arms

HAEF has applied conservation treatment to many Omani rifles found in the Sultanate’s forts and castles. The more vulnerable are kept in climate-controlled storage in the Centre of Excellence for Historic Small Arms at the Bayt Ar Rudaydah. The collection includes some ornately-decorated Omani matchlocks (‘Abu Futilla’, or ‘father of the match’) as well as 19th-century Martini Henry breechloading rifles from Britain decorated with silver bands and nails in Omani style. The collection also includes examples of historic rifles and pistols from around the world, and other exhibits illustrating the development of firearms technology.
